The Organized Junk Drawer

We all need junk drawers, but I think “junk” gets a bad rap. What I keep in our drawer isn’t necessarily junk, but items we keep handy for miscellaneous reasons.  We need a place to store these likely used items, from my husband’s wallet and all the car keys to rubber bands, scotch tape, and matches.

But how quickly it gets messed up as other misplaced items get shoved in the drawer because you don’t know where else to put them, or you’re unsure if you even want them! Or, if you’re like me, hubby puts odds and ends in the drawer that I can’t even identify!  Before long, leftover change, a couple of batteries, some screws from recent projects, and a screwdriver make their way to the drawer to be tossed in and quickly forgotten.

I recently ordered dividers from Amazon to rein in the clutter and organize (or I should say, reorganize) the drawer.  I couldn’t take the muck and clutter any longer!

First, clean out the drawer. Don’t try to shove things to one side or the other; clean the drawer out thoroughly. Look at what you have, deciding what should go back into the drawer and what items should go elsewhere.

Arrange the drawer with items used more frequently toward the front and those used less frequently toward the back. Now is the time to arrange the dividers to accommodate the items returning to the drawer.

I’m obsessed with how pretty a drawer or cabinet looks—more than I should be. But even more, it’s nice to open a drawer or cupboard and find exactly what you need, when you need it!
